Death notice of Jesse James Cumbee (1949 – 2021) – North Charleston, South Carolina


Jesse James Cumbee, Jr., 72, of Hanahan, South Carolina, husband of Jessica Tedder Cumbee of 21 years, applied for and received permission to cross the bridge and go ashore on Sunday, December 5, 2021 at 5 p.m. h 48. He was surrounded by his
close family.
Born March 4, 1949, he was the son of the late Jesse James Cumbee, Sr. and Elizabeth Roberts and was predeceased by his sister, Mary Skipper, Jamestown, SC.
Jesse graduated from Murray High School in Charleston, SC. He joined the Navy on June 25, 1969 and served on the USS Midway during the Vietnam War as an Aviation Electrical Officer. Jesse was awarded the National Defense Service Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal and the Bronze Star and received an honorable discharge on March 4, 1975. After his discharge, he worked in hotel maintenance as a as supervisor in Atlanta then in Charleston. He worked for many years and retired as a project manager for Shiptech America LLC, Charleston, SC.
Jesse was a life member of the American Legion, a former commander of Station 1 in Atlanta. He was a long-time member of VFW, currently VFW 5091, N. Charleston, SC, Sons of the American Legion, Squadron 147, James Island, SC, Fleet Reserve, Past Pres. Branch 50, N. Charleston, SC and transferred to Branch 269, Goose Creek, SC. Jesse was a dedicated member of The Society of Forty Men and Eight Horses aka 40 & 8, having served as Past Grand Station Chief of SC, and Past Station Chief of Car 974, James Island, SC. He was the current Secretary General of Southlands Dixie Promenade and a National Officer. While in Atlanta, he was a valued member of Car 217 and Car 217 Train Crew. Jesse was an active member of American Legion Post 147, James Island, SC. He served 21 years in the Honor Guard and was the current captain at the time of his death.
He is survived by his wife Jesse, his son Joseph J. Blitch, his sister Blanche Nichols, Moncks Corner, SC; brother, John Cumbee, (Bonnie), Cottageville, SC. He is also survived by the children of Jessica, whom he considered to be his own daughter, Laura Ann Brogan, Hollywood, SC; son, Trey Benson, Huger, SC; granddaughter Selena Marie Benson and great grandson Atlas Salem Nelson, Hanahan, SC; granddaughter Kelsi Morrow, Huger, SC; grandsons Jacob Benson, New Jersey; Tyler Connolly and TJ Benson, Summerville, SC.
In January 2021, he was predeceased by the second love of his life, his loving dog, Bessie Mae Cumbee. They are now together and he can take her on all the walks she wants. I know they are both happy.
A Celebration of Life, which will include Ritual 40 and 8 and full military honors, will be held at American Legion Ralph H. Johnson Station 147, 968 Folly Road, James Island, SC 29412, on Saturday February 12, 2022 at 2 h.
