Hanoi (VNA)President Nguyen Xuan Phuc attended a ceremony in the northern province of Hung Yen on October 1 in response to Vietnam’s month of action for the elderly, on the occasion of the International Day of Older Persons.

In his speech, the leader extended his greetings and congratulations to the 12 million elderly people for their active contributions to national construction and defense.

Describing them as an important driving force of society and a pillar of families and communities, he affirmed that the Vietnamese Party, State and people are always respectful and grateful to thousands of old women honored as Vietnamese mothers. heroes, many heroines of the people’s armed forces. and Heroes of Labor for their tireless sacrifice and dedication.

He hailed the Vietnamese Elderly Association (VAE) with 10 million members, including its Hung Yen provincial branch, for organizing activities in response to the month, patriotic emulation campaigns and the fight against COVID. -19.

He called on the VAE, Party committees and authorities to continue to follow Party guidelines, state policies and laws on the elderly, creating the conditions for them to maintain their role in the national development, continue to be shining examples and a spiritual pillar for future generations.

The president hoped that Vietnamese elders at home and abroad continue to join in patriotic emulation campaigns, thus devoting their intelligence and experience to national development.

On this occasion, he presented gifts to five centenarians of the province and certificates of merit to individuals and organizations that care for the elderly.

During a working session with the Standing Bureau of the Provincial Party Committee on the same day, the leader endorsed their proposal to choose three strategic breakthroughs, namely management in accordance with provincial planning, development of socio-economic infrastructure with a focus on transport infrastructure, and high quality manpower training.

The province should move towards high-tech and environment-friendly industry, spread organic farming and high-tech models, and support new-style cooperative models, he said.

Hung Yen should continue to improve the business environment and economic resilience, promoting the private sector and the start-up spirit among young people, he said.

Over the past nine months, the local economy grew by 10.4%, with state budget revenue reaching over VND 45 trillion ($1.95 billion), an increase of 3, 4 times compared to the same period last year. The disbursement of public investments reached 92.4% of the plan. The province also ranked third nationally in terms of the target program for new rural development in 2020. The rate of poor households has been reduced to less than 2.5%./.
