Vietnam Airlines successfully operates its first direct flight to the United States

Vietnam Airlines successfully operates its first direct flight to the United States.

Since November 28, Vietnam Airlines has been operating regular flights twice a week between Ho Chi Minh City and San Francisco. The airline plans to increase the number of flights to seven per week after the control of the COVID-19 pandemic and the Vietnamese government allows the reopening of regular international routes.

Vietnam Airlines is also planning to open more routes between Los Angeles in the United States and Hanoi or HCM City. All flights between Vietnam and the United States will use the most modern wide-body aircraft, such as the Boeing 787 and Airbus A350.

Vietnam Airlines General Manager Le Hong Ha said more than a year ago, Vietnam Airlines became the first Vietnamese airline to fly directly to the United States to bring Vietnamese citizens home.

Its direct flight to the United States marked a big step forward for the company and a historic milestone for Vietnam’s aviation industry, he said.

It took the direct flight 13 hours and 45 minutes to reach the United States. The flight used the Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner, one of the most modern wide-body aircraft in the world manufactured by the American company Boeing.

San Francisco International Airport Director Ivar C. Satero said the event made the airport the main gateway to the United States for passengers from Vietnam to access areas of San Francisco Bay.

The Vietnamese aviation industry and Vietnam Airlines have been preparing for 20 years to open a scheduled airline to the United States. The program officially ended on November 4 this year after the national carrier officially received a permit from the United States Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to operate non-stop commercial flight service between the two countries.

The event is expected to help promote economic cooperation, cultural exchanges and relations between Vietnam and the United States.

Statistics show that the aviation market between Vietnam and the United States had 1.4 million passengers in 2019, with an average growth of 8% per year during the period 2017-2019./.
